James Windle is a Senior Professional Practice Fellow in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Otago, part of the Faculty of Health Professional Programmes within the Health Sciences Division. He completed his PhD at the University of Otago in 2023, with the thesis titled "Investigating sector assessment relationships within pharmacist education and training: A pathway for preparedness?", supervised by Professor Ian Tucker, Professor Jeffrey Smith of the University College of Education, and Professor Rachel Spronken-Smith of the Higher Education Development Centre. His doctoral research examined assessment relationships across sectors in pharmacist education and their role in preparing professionals for practice.
Windle's research specializations include learning and assessment connections between the undergraduate years of the Otago BPharm degree and pre-registration internships, as well as predictors of academic performance and postgraduate competence in pharmacy students. Key publications are "Relationships between academic performance of pharmacy students and their postgraduate competence during internship" (Pharmacy Education, 2020, with R.A. Spronken-Smith, J.K. Smith, I.G. Tucker), which analyzes performance links; "Preadmission predictors of academic performance in a pharmacy program: A longitudinal, multi-cohort study" (Currents in Pharmacy Teaching & Learning, 2018, with the same co-authors), identifying early success factors; and a contribution to "Longitudinal impact of preregistration interprofessional education on the attitudes and skills of health professionals during their early careers: A non-randomised trial with 4-year outcomes" (BMJ Open, 2022, B. Darlow et al.). He also co-authored a 2016 conference abstract "Does admission performance from a Health Science programme predict performance as a pharmacy student?" presented at the Australasian Pharmaceutical Science Association Conference. In teaching, he coordinates PHCY420 Pharmacy Practice Leadership and Management and contributes to PHCY210 Introduction to Pharmacy. Windle has supported pharmacy student initiatives, including the Green Cross Health Pharmacy Awards coordination and White Coat Ceremonies.
