Jamie Shaw is the Manager of the Communications Advisory Service at the University of Otago, a role he began in 2024. He possesses more than 18 years of experience in communications and journalism roles, primarily in the public sector. An alumnus of the University of Otago, Shaw earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from 2001 to 2003. He also holds a National Diploma in Journalism, awarded by Aoraki Polytechnic in 2004. These qualifications have underpinned his progression through various communications positions, equipping him with skills in media relations, public engagement, and strategic messaging.
Prior to joining the University of Otago, Jamie Shaw served as Communications Team Leader at Dunedin City Council. In this capacity, he managed communications efforts for the local authority. Previously, he worked as Communications Adviser for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, with a focus on Civil Defence matters. Earlier in his career, Shaw was Communications Coordinator for Clutha District Council and started as a reporter for the Westport News. At Otago, Shaw contributes kōrero to the University Newsroom across diverse topics, including the Dunedin Campus BioBlitz event for connecting with nature and sustainability, the student-run thrift shop Te Oraka making an impact on campus life, feedback sought on the Campus Master Plan refresh, milestone visits by sister colleges to Arana, recognition of trailblazers for women's rights, Otago travel awards sparking international pharmacy connections, retirements of long-serving staff like mailroom administrators and fleet managers, and innovations like AVA assisting international student admissions. His work supports effective communication of university news, events, and achievements to the public.
