Dr. Jared S. Rose serves as Associate Professor and Clinical Mental Health & School Counseling Coordinator at Bowling Green State University’s School of Counseling, Higher Education, Leadership, and Foundations within the College of Education and Human Development. He holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision, an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, a B.A. in Philosophy, and a B.A. in Psychology, all from The University of Toledo. As an Ohio Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervision Endorsement (LPCC-S), National Certified Counselor (NCC), and EMDR Certified Therapist, he continues to offer clinical mental health services through his private practice.
Dr. Rose’s scholarship centers on advocacy and social justice issues, including competency and ethics in mental health professions, support for Sex/Sexuality/Affectionality/Gender Minorities (LGBQ+ and Trans*), and human trafficking. He has produced over 40 peer-reviewed publications in journals and books, alongside statewide HIV and STI education curricula. Notable works include his 2022 chapter “They hurt me and I didn’t ask them to: Healing after sexual violence” in the Handbook for Human Sexuality Counseling; the 2020 article “Development and validation of the mental health professionals’ attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS scale (MHP-PLHIV-AS)” in AIDS Care; “Advocacy and social justice within and on behalf of the LGBTGEQIAP+ community” in the Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling (2020); and “Social media policy for counselor education programs” in The Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision (2020). Additionally, he has delivered more than 180 conference presentations across regional, state, national, and international venues, served as an invited keynote speaker eight times, and appeared in over 40 educational television and radio broadcasts.
In his professional service, Dr. Rose founded and advises PRISM, BGSU’s organization for LGBTQ+ students, and has been Faculty Advisor for the Chi Sigma Iota Beta Gamma Chapter for 10 years. He held the presidency of the Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (SAIGE) from 2017 to 2019 and has served in leadership capacities for the Ohio Counseling Association, American Counseling Association, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and Chi Sigma Iota. As a 15-year elected board member of the Lucas County Human Trafficking Coalition, he earned the 2022 Community Cares Award from the Human Trafficking and Social Justice Institute. Other honors include the BGSU LGBTQ+ Excellence Faculty Award (2022), Leadership & Professional Advocacy Hero Award from Chi Sigma Iota (2021), and Ned Farley Service Award from ALGBTIC (2018). His extensive contributions have significantly influenced counseling education, ethical practices, and support for marginalized communities.
