Associate Professor Jason Condon holds the position of Associate Professor in Soil Science within the School of Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, where he has taught soil science and soil management subjects since 1996. He earned his Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Honours) from La Trobe University in 1995, with honours research on acid soil amelioration methods conducted at Wagga Agricultural Institute, and completed his PhD at Charles Sturt University in 2002 on acidification mechanisms in pasture systems while working part-time in an academic role. Growing up on a farm in southern New South Wales shaped his practical orientation towards soil science. Additional appointments include Research Officer at NSW Department of Primary Industries since 2018, President of the Riverina Branch of Soil Science Australia from 2019 to 2025, and Visiting Research Fellow at Can Tho University in Vietnam in 2006. He completed a Teaching Fellowship in 2002 and has supervised six PhD completions, one MSc, and 16 Honours projects in soil, crop, and pasture topics.
Condon specializes in practical soil science research addressing real-world issues, including soil acidification and acid soil management, salinity, soil carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas emissions, fertiliser efficiencies, and nutrient cycling. With over 15 years of experience on soil and farming systems in Vietnam's Mekong River Delta through ACIAR-funded grants, he fosters strong industry collaborations with groups like FarmLink, Central West Farming Systems, Holbrook Landcare Network, Riverine Plains, NSW DPI, Nutrien, Delta Ag, and AgnVet Services. His extension efforts communicate agronomically relevant mechanisms to end users, advisors, and land managers. Key publications encompass Gardner et al., 'Nitrogen mineralisation rates from chicory-based pastures' (European Journal of Agronomy, 2024); Kaveney et al., 'Inland dry season saline intrusion in the Vietnamese Mekong River Delta...' (Agricultural Systems, 2023); Parvin, Condon, and Rose, 'Rooting depth and water use of summer cover crops...' (European Journal of Agronomy, 2023); Doran, Condon, and Kaveney, 'Quantification of 3,4-Dimethyl-1H-Pyrazole...' (Journal of AOAC International, 2023); and Hayes, Condon, and Li, 'The role of liming in improving soil health' (book chapter, 2023). He co-wrote the e-textbook 'STute: Tutorials in Soil Science' and has secured funding from GRDC, MLA, DAFF, and ACIAR.
