Jason Murdock is an Associate Professor in the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art at Georgia Southern University, where he joined the faculty in 2017 on the Statesboro campus. He also holds an affiliation with the Center for Public Health Practice & Research. Murdock earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication Design from the Herron School of Art & Design at Indiana University and his Master of Fine Arts in Visual Communication Design from Kent State University in 2016. His research specializations include graphic design, communication design, visual communication design, typeface design, branding and visual identity design, design processes, graphic design history, and visual identity. He has presented his research at national and international venues. Murdock has been awarded for teaching excellence and for his graphic design work. He serves as Communications & Marketing Lead for the Targeted Technical Assistance Program (TTAP) for rural hospitals, a Georgia Southern University initiative, and as an Alternate Faculty Senate representative for the College of Arts and Humanities until 2026.
Murdock supervises numerous student theses and projects in graphic design areas. Examples include chairing committees for 'A Study on the Visual and Verbal Languages of Typography' (2020), 'Using Graphic Design to Enhance The Visitor Experience at The Center For Wildlife Education at Georgia Southern University' (2019), 'A Systems Approach to Graphic Design Practice' (2019), 'Best Practices for Social Media Branding' (2023), 'Myelination: A Plastic Religion' (thesis), and 'Waves: An Exploration of Emotions' (2021). Under his guidance, Georgia Southern graphic design students won Gold and Silver ADDY Awards in 2018 for problem-solving projects involving fuzzy situations. Key publications are 'From Design-by-Inspiration to Case-Based Design: A Four-Part Framework for Teaching Case-Based Communication Design' at the Insight 2018 Design Research Symposium and his master's thesis 'Fluid Identity: History & Practice of Dynamic Visual Identity Design' (Kent State University, 2016). He teaches courses including ART 2330 Graphic Design: Typography and Imagery and ART 4336 Graphic Design Data and Information Visualization.
