Professor Javier Gonzalez is Professor of Nutrition and Metabolism in the Department for Health at the University of Bath. He holds a BSc (Hons), MRes, PhD, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Gonzalez joined the University of Bath in 2014 as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) and progressed through promotions to Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in 2017, Reader in 2020, and Professor of Nutrition and Metabolism in 2022. In addition to his academic role, he serves as a consultant to sports teams and industry.
Gonzalez's research centers on human fuel use, investigating how dietary fuels are oxidized during exercise, stored in excess, and influence metabolic health. His interests encompass human nutrition, exercise metabolism, energy balance, glucose control, and metabolic health, utilizing techniques such as indirect calorimetry, muscle biopsies, and stable isotope tracers in controlled and free-living settings. He is affiliated with the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism and the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human. Notable publications include 'Liver glycogen metabolism during and after prolonged endurance-type exercise' (Gonzalez et al., 2016, American Journal of Physiology: Endocrinology and Metabolism), 'Ingestion of glucose or sucrose prevents liver but not muscle glycogen depletion during prolonged endurance-type exercise in trained cyclists' (Gonzalez et al., 2015, same journal), 'Lipid metabolism links nutrient-exercise timing to insulin sensitivity in men classified as overweight or obese' (Edinburgh et al., 2020, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism), and 'Ketogenic diet but not free-sugar restriction alters glucose tolerance, lipid metabolism, peripheral tissue phenotype and gut microbiome: RCT' (Hengist et al., 2024, Cell Reports Medicine). Gonzalez received the Julie Wallace Award from the Nutrition Society in 2018 and the Inaugural Excellence in Nutrition Fellow from the American Society for Nutrition in 2025. He holds the position of Associate Editor for the International Journal of Sport Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism and has obtained research funding from organizations including the Medical Research Council, British Heart Foundation, and Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. He also contributes to policy through committee roles and expert testimonies.
