She earned her PhD in 1979 and BSc (Hons) from the University of New South Wales. Internationally recognized as GI Jennie, she pioneered the glycemic index (GI), a standardized method to classify carbohydrate-containing foods based on their blood glucose-raising potential, revolutionizing nutritional science. Her career includes holding a Personal Chair in Human Nutrition, leading the Carbohydrate Nutrition Group, and serving as President of the Glycemic Index Foundation. Brand-Miller developed the Sydney University GI testing service and maintains the International GI Database, tools widely used in research and food industry.

Her research specializes in human nutrition, focusing on carbohydrate quality, glycemic responses, insulin sensitivity, and their roles in obesity, diabetes, and metabolic health. Key publications include the highly cited International tables of glycemic index and glycemic load values (2002, over 4,200 citations; 2008 update, over 2,400 citations), Glycemic index, glycemic load, and chronic disease risk—a meta-analysis of observational studies (2008), and Low-glycemic index diets in the management of diabetes (2003). She co-authored influential books such as The New Glucose Revolution series and Professor Jennie Brand-Miller's Low GI Diet Shopper's Guide (2015). Awards include election as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (2018), Member of the Order of Australia, Fellow of the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology, and Fellow of the Nutrition Society of Australia. Her work has shaped global dietary recommendations, public health policies, and low-GI food endorsements, demonstrating profound impact on nutrition science and practice.
