Jennifer Mathews is a Professor of Practice in the Legal Research, Advocacy, and Communications program at Emory University School of Law, part of the Law faculty. Her main academic focus is legal writing, research, and advocacy. She instructs first-year students in Legal Writing, Research, and Advocacy (LWRAP), as well as upper-level legal writing courses and classes within the Juris Master (JM) program. Mathews earned a BA cum laude from Amherst College in 1991. Following her undergraduate studies, she worked in academic publishing before obtaining her JD from Rutgers School of Law-Newark in 1997. At Rutgers, she served as an editor on the Rutgers Law Review and taught legal research and writing to first-year law students, gaining early experience in legal pedagogy.
Prior to her appointment at Emory Law in 2000, Mathews accumulated diverse professional experience in the legal field. She clerked for the Honorable Alfred M. Wolin in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, practiced in the commercial litigation department at McCarter & English LLP in Newark, New Jersey, and worked as a writer and editor for Lawyers Weekly USA, a national legal newspaper based in Boston. At Emory University School of Law, she additionally served as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs for two years, contributing to student support and administration. In recognition of her teaching excellence, she received the Crystal Apple Award for Excellence in Professional School Education in 2012 from Emory University. Mathews has also engaged in international education initiatives, teaching a three-day Constitutional Law class for judges at City University in China in 2018. As associated faculty for Piedmont Park House, she supports student community building within the law school's academic support houses system.
