About Jenny

Jenny Gregory AM FRHS MPHA MICOMOS is Emeritus Professor of History in the School of Humanities at The University of Western Australia, where she earned her BA (Hons) in 1982 and PhD in 1989. Her doctoral thesis, titled 'The manufacture of middle class suburbia: The promontory of Claremont, Nedlands and Dalkeith within the city of Perth, Western Australia, 1830s–1930s', examined residential development patterns. She began her UWA career as a casual tutor in Australian history during her doctoral studies, then held contract lecturing positions from 1991 to 1997 teaching Australian, Western Australian, and urban history, earning the UWA Excellence in Teaching Award in 1993. Key appointments include Director of the Centre for Western Australian History (1989-1998), Director of UWA Publishing (1998-2006), Chair of the Discipline of Philosophy (2007), Chair of the Discipline of History (2008), Acting Head of the School of Music (2009-2011), and Head of the School of Humanities (2009-2016). Appointed Winthrop Professor of History in 2011, she now serves as Warden of the Convocation of UWA Graduates and Senior Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Humanities.

Gregory's research specializations encompass urban history, planning history, heritage, public housing in Australia, water sensitive cities, lost places and the limits of heritage, and Western Australian history. Notable publications include Cities in a Sunburnt Country: Water and the Making of Urban Australia (2022), Seeking Wisdom: A Centenary History of The University of Western Australia (editor, 2013), Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia (editor-in-chief, 2009), City of Light: A History of Perth Since the Fifties (2003), Claremont: A History (1999, with Geoffrey Bolton), Building a Tradition: A History of Scotch College, Perth 1897-1996 (1996), On the Homefront: Western Australia and World War II (editor, 1996), and Western Australia Between the Wars, 1919-1939 (1990). She has profoundly influenced heritage and history fields through leadership as Chair and President of the National Trust of Western Australia (1998-2010), council member (1993-2022), Deputy Director of the Australian Council of National Trusts (2007-2010), inaugural President of the History Council of Western Australia (2001-2006 and 2016-2020), and Director of the WA History Foundation (1999-2022). Awards include Member of the Order of Australia (2010), Centenary Medal (2001), Champion Award by the National Year of the Built Environment (2004), Stirling Award (2011), Margaret Medcalf Award (2021), Chancellor's Medal (2022), and WA History Foundation award for best first book (1997).
