Dr Jenny Keightley is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch, within the Faculty of Medicine. She joined the department in June 2017 to continue the development of its postgraduate programmes, particularly the Postgraduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine. With qualifications including BSc Human Biology, MB ChB, Dip Obst, and Dip MSM, Keightley became interested in musculoskeletal medicine during her early years in general practice. In 2006, she graduated with the Postgraduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine and has since taken master's papers, fostering an appreciation for evidence-based resources and their application to practice. Musculoskeletal diagnoses make up 20-25% of general practice consultations, providing ample scope for applying her knowledge. She now practices predominantly as a musculoskeletal physician with a special interest in pain conditions affecting older patients.
Keightley's expertise encompasses musculoskeletal medicine, pain conditions in older patients, and musculoskeletal clinical medicine. Her research interests involve developing postgraduate programmes in musculoskeletal medicine and applying evidence to clinical practice. She teaches neurobiology of pain and on-campus musculoskeletal medicine courses, while allocating 0.4 FTE to musculoskeletal clinical medicine. Professional involvements include the Executive for the Department of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Medicine Postgraduate programmes, the ACC Hi-Tech Imaging Project in Canterbury, and the National Expert Advisory Group for the Ministry of Health's Mobility Action Programme. Keightley holds fellowships as FRNZCGP from the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and FAFMM from the Australasian Faculty of Musculoskeletal Medicine.
