Jenny Shepherd serves as Senior Lecturer in Medical Imaging at the University of Exeter's College of Medicine and Health. In her academic roles, she is the Programme Lead for the MSc Radiography Degree Apprenticeship, Director of Practice Education for Medical Imaging, and a key member of the placements team. She convenes essential modules including Applied Radiographic Knowledge 1 (RAD1001DA), Professional Practice 3 (RAD3002DA), and Practice Placement (RADM104DA) for the BSc (Hons) Medical Imaging (Diagnostic Radiography) degree programme. These responsibilities enable her to integrate practical clinical training with university education, supporting students in developing radiographic skills while maintaining her involvement in NHS clinical practice.
With a career centered on general and interventional radiography, Shepherd has advanced educational innovation through her 2021/22 Education Incubator Fellowship at the University of Exeter. Her project, 'Exploring the potential of 3D virtual reality (VR) as part of a blended learning approach to teaching clinical skills to student radiographers,' investigates technology-enhanced teaching methods to prepare future radiographers effectively. In research, she is first author on the 2022 publication 'Radiographer-led discharge for emergency care patients requiring projection radiography of minor musculoskeletal injuries: a scoping review' in BMC Emergency Medicine, co-authored with Ilianna Lourida and Robert M. Meertens from the University of Exeter. This peer-reviewed article, cited five times, reviews evidence on radiographer-led discharge to alleviate emergency department pressures for minor injury cases involving projection radiography. A correction to this work was also published in 2022. Shepherd has contributed to conference abstracts, including those at UKIO 2023 on radiographer/radiologist education and learning in artificial intelligence, alongside colleagues Christine Heales, Lucy Banfield, and Demelza Green. Additionally, she hosts episodes of the University of Exeter's Exeplore podcast, such as discussions on NHS employer perspectives for radiography apprenticeships, highlighting the first graduates of the programme in 2025. Her efforts enhance radiography education, clinical practice efficiency, and professional development in the field.
