Jensen Moore, Ph.D., serves as Associate Professor of Public Relations in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma, a role she assumed in Fall 2023 following her tenure as Assistant Professor from 2016 to 2023. She holds a Ph.D. in strategic communication and health communication from the University of Missouri (2007), a Master’s in strategic communication from the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication (2003), and a B.S. in business administration with emphases in marketing and mass communication (journalism and public relations), along with a minor in psychology, from Black Hills State University (1999). Prior appointments include Assistant Professor of Strategic Communication at Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Mass Communication (2012-2016), where she advised PRSSA, imPRint Communications, and the Bateman Team, and at West Virginia University’s P.I. Reed School of Journalism (2009-2011), directing online undergraduate programs and developing new courses and minors in health promotion and media entrepreneurship. Her professional career encompasses positions as Community Relations Director and Advertising Executive for the St. Paul Saints professional baseball team (2000-2001), Media Relations and Public Relations Director for the Grand Rapids Hoops professional basketball team (1999-2000), and various consulting roles in social media, marketing, and service-learning.
Moore’s research focuses on the intersection of social media, crisis communication, and health communication, examining grief expression on social networking sites, information sharing during natural and man-made disasters, and organizational responses to tragedies. Notable publications include “Social media mourning: Using grounded theory to explore how people grieve on social networking sites” in Omega: The Journal of Death and Dying (79(3), 231-259), “Organizational social media mourning: Toward a framework for organizations wishing to empathize with publics during tragedies” in Public Relations Journal (2023), and the forthcoming book Public Relations: Principles, Origins & Practice (Cognella Academic Publishing), along with over 30 journal articles, book chapters, and refereed proceedings. She has earned awards such as the Excellence in Education Award from Black Hills State University Alumni Association (2021), Owen Kulemeka Trailblazer Award in Diversity from Gaylord College (2020), OU Presidential Dream Course grant ($20,000) for Sport Promotion (2018), Public Relations Educator of the Year from Southern Public Relations Federation (2014), and election as Chair of the PRSA Educators Academy (2023). Moore has led the Mass Communication & Society Division of AEJMC (2015-2016), serves on the International Public Relations Research Conference Advisory Committee, and her service-learning courses have partnered with over 25 organizations, with students securing Ketchum Mindfire wins and PRSSA recognitions.
