About Jerzy

Jerzy Rozenblit is the University Distinguished Professor and Raymond J. Oglethorpe Endowed Chair of electrical and computer engineering at The University of Arizona. He also holds appointments as Professor of Surgery in the UA College of Medicine–Tucson and Professor of the BIO5 Institute. Rozenblit received his PhD in Computer Science from Wayne State University in 1985, MS in Computer Science from the same institution in 1983, and MS in Computer Science and Engineering from Wroclaw University of Technology in 1980. He served as Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2003 to 2011. Throughout his career at the University of Arizona, he has established the Model-Based Design Laboratory, directing projects on the design and analysis of complex computer-based systems, hardware/software co-design, and simulation modeling. These efforts have attracted over $20 million in funding from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Army, NASA, Raytheon, Semiconductor Research Corporation, and industry leaders like Siemens, Infineon Technologies, Rockwell, and McDonnell Douglas.

Rozenblit's academic interests center on modeling and computer simulation, computer-aided minimally invasive surgery, and the application of computer-based technologies to clinical medicine. As Director of the Life-Critical Computing Systems Initiative, he collaborates with the Arizona Surgical Technology and Education Center to develop computer-guided training methods and systems for surgeons. He is the co-author of several edited monographs, including Codesign: Computer-Aided Software/Hardware Engineering (IEEE Press, 1994), and has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications. Key contributions include "An Adaptive Force Guidance System for Computer-Guided Laparoscopy Training" (IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, 2021) and chapters such as "Systems Design, Modeling, and Simulation in Medicine" (2017). Rozenblit has earned Best Teacher awards and recognition for mentoring numerous PhD and MS graduates. His professional service encompasses editorships for ACM, IEEE, and Society for Computer Simulation Transactions, chairmanship of major conferences, and committee roles at the university level. He has held visiting positions including Fulbright Senior Scholar at Johannes Kepler University in Austria and Research Fellow at U.S. Army Research Laboratories.
