Jill C. Trepanier serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Louisiana State University. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from Florida State University (2012), with a dissertation titled 'Quantifying extreme hurricane risk in the North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico'; an M.S. in Geography from Florida State University (2009), with a thesis on 'Pre-landfall intensity as predictor of economic loss from Florida hurricanes, 1900–2007'; and a B.A. in Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (2007). Trepanier began her career at LSU as Assistant Professor in Geography and Anthropology in August 2012, was promoted to Associate Professor in August 2018, and has served as Director of Graduate Studies since May 2021. She teaches courses including Physical Geography of the Atmosphere, Meteorology, and Coastal Tropical Climate.
Dr. Trepanier specializes in hurricane climatology and the estimation of risk using statistical methods, currently applying this expertise to evaluate risks to cultural heritage institutions, Native American sites, and coastal fisheries. She contributes to environmental science education by implementing weather stations with real-time data for K-12 classrooms in South Louisiana. Her peer-reviewed publications include 'Stalling North Atlantic Tropical Cyclones' (Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, 2024, with Nielsen-Gammon, Brown, Thompson, and Keim); 'Spatiotemporal Climatology of Georgia Tropical Cyclones and Associated Rainfall' (Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2024, with Corkran and Brown); 'Advances in Tropical Climatology – A Review' (Physical Geography, 2024, with Dias de Souza Moraes, Ramseyer, and Miller); 'North Atlantic Hurricane Winds in Warmer than Normal Seas' (Atmosphere, 2020); and 'Climatology and Spatiotemporal Analysis of North Atlantic Rapidly Intensifying Hurricanes (1851–2017)' (Atmosphere, 2020, with Benedetto). Trepanier has received the Louisiana State University Tiger Athletic Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award (2020, 2014), Robert Udick Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award (2015), Louisiana State University Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award (2019), Rising Faculty Research Award (2017), and National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program Fellowship (2016–2018).
