Jim Strode, Ph.D., is the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs and Assessment and the O’Bleness Professor of Sports Administration at Ohio University’s College of Business within the Business & Economics faculty. He leads undergraduate degree programs, manages college-level curriculum processes, oversees signature undergraduate programs, academic advising, and career services, and collaborates to recruit, retain, and place undergraduate Business Bobcats. In his role, he has assisted in bringing the Ohio Export Internship Program to the college and led a global initiative to create a double degree program with Deakin University in Australia. Strode formerly chaired the Department of Sports Administration at Ohio University, developing a five-year strategic plan, mission and vision statements, a diversity, equity, and inclusion plan, revising the Bachelor of Sport Management curriculum, redeveloping the graduate program advisory board, and forging partnerships with sport organizations for experiential learning opportunities. Previously, he served as Dean of Graduate Studies at Ohio Dominican University, providing leadership over eight master’s programs, aiding Higher Learning Commission approval for doctoral education, converting programs to online and blended formats, enhancing professional development and admissions synergies, and delivering the 110th commencement address in 2018. There, he achieved tenure and associate professor rank, developed the Master of Science in Sport Management curriculum as inaugural director, coordinated the undergraduate program, advised the Sport Management Society, and developed minors in coaching and sport media. Earlier, as assistant professor at Ashland University, he headed the undergraduate Sport Management department, advised the Sport Management Club, and taught graduate and doctoral courses.
Strode earned his Ph.D. in Sport and Exercise Management from The Ohio State University in 2006, M.A. from the same institution in 2003, and BBA in Marketing and Management from the University of Wisconsin in 2002. His academic interests focus on philanthropy in intercollegiate athletics, coaching effectiveness, and gender equity and inclusion in sport leadership. Key publications include “Exercising Empathy in the Sport Management Classroom: The True Flipped Classroom” (Sport Management Education Journal, 2024), “Organizational Level Factors that Influence Women Coaches Experiences” with Parker and Kerwin (Journal of Sport Management, 2023), “Stereotype Threat and Interscholastic Athletic Leadership” with Parkman, Czekanski, and Scarlata (Sociology of Sport Journal, 2023), “Missing the Mark: Gathering Better Data from Student-Athlete Exit Interviews” with Davies and Lawrence (Case Studies in Sport Management, 2021), and “Patience is a Virtue: Exploiting Bias Behavior in Gambling Markets” with Krieger and Davis (Journal of Economics and Finance, 2021). He received the 2023 Distinguished Educator Award from the North American Society for Sport Management, served as President of the Alliance for Sport Business from 2021 to 2024, and at Ohio Dominican University earned the Sr. Angelita Conely Award for excellence in teaching (2012) and the Sr. Charles Marie Brantl Influential Panther Award (2013). Strode has presented research at NASSM, EASM, SMAANZ, and NASSS conferences and is a 19-year veteran high school basketball coach, past president of the District 10 Basketball Coaches Association.
