James Sundali is a Professor of Strategic Management in Business & Economics at the University of Nevada, Reno's College of Business, a position he has held since 2014 after serving as Associate Professor from 2000 to 2014 and Assistant Professor from 1997 to 2000. He currently directs the Ph.D. in Business Administration Program with a concentration in Management. Sundali received his Ph.D. in Business Administration with a minor in Finance from the University of Arizona in 1995; his dissertation, "An experimental investigation of market entry problems," was advised by Amnon Rapoport. He earned an MBA in 1990 and a B.S. in Economics in 1985, both from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Earlier, he taught as an Assistant Professor at Kent State University from 1995 to 1997 and worked as a stockbroker and financial planning consultant from 1986 to 1987.
Sundali's research interests center on judgment and decision making, behavioral finance, and behavioral economics. He teaches core strategic management courses at the undergraduate and MBA levels, electives in decision making and negotiation, and a Ph.D. seminar in managerial decision making. He also leads a summer travel class, "Leadership Insights from the Humanities," in New York City. Notable publications include "Risk aversion and social influence" (Experimental Economics, 2025), "Behavioral Responses to Losses Disguised as Wins: A Field Study of Slot Machine Players" (Journal of Gambling Studies, 2023), "Investor beliefs in the midst of a market crash and the COVID 19 pandemic: Survey and experimental evidence" (Decision, 2021), "An empirical investigation of wagering behavior in a large sample of slot machine gamblers" (Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 2020), "Temptation and Retirement Accounts: A Story of Time Inconsistency and Bounded Rationality" (Athens Journal of Business & Economics, in press), "The effect of early and salient investment experiences on subsequent asset allocations—An experimental study" (Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Finance, 2018), and "Managing a 401K account: An experiment on asset allocation" (Journal of Behavioral Finance, 2009). He is inducted into the University of Nevada, Reno Business Strategy Game Hall of Fame.
