Professor Jingjing Xu is the Dean of the School of Business, Education and Law at the University of Huddersfield, a role she took up in September 2025. An internationally renowned expert in maritime law and economics, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, an MSc in Shipping Management from the World Maritime University, and a PhD in Maritime Law. Her research specializations include law and policy issues concerning marine pollution, maritime safety and security, marine renewable energy development, and interdisciplinary maritime topics. Professor Xu has published widely, co-editing prominent volumes such as Maritime Law in Motion (Springer, 2020) with Proshanto K. Mukherjee and Maximo Q. Mejia Jr., and Contemporary Marine and Maritime Policy (Nova Science Publishers). Key publications also encompass 'The Law and Economics of Pollution Damage Arising from Carriage of Oil by Sea' (Maritime Policy & Management, 2009), 'The Use of LNG as a Marine Fuel: Civil Liability Considerations from an International Perspective' (Ocean Development & International Law, 2017), and 'Developing Research Skills in International Maritime Logistics Using Action Learning' (Research in Transportation Business & Management, 2012). She has led research projects funded by the European Union and the UK government, enhancing her impact in the field.
Professor Xu's distinguished career includes serving as Head of Plymouth Business School at the University of Plymouth from 2018, having joined that institution in 2007 and progressed through roles such as Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Business, Director of the Institute for Social, Policy and Enterprise Research, and Interim Head of School. She previously held the position of Academic Dean and Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (China) at Coventry University, along with senior leadership positions at universities in Canada. A Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation and the Higher Education Academy, she is a member of the British Maritime Law Association. Professor Xu has undertaken visiting and adjunct professorships in Sweden, Australia, and China, and has contributed as an expert adviser to international research and policy initiatives.
