Jingwen Liu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton, a position she has held since Fall 2019, following promotion from Assistant Professor effective August 19, 2024. She earned her Ph.D. in Physical Education Teacher Education from The University of Texas at Austin in 2019, M.S. in Sports Psychology from Florida State University in 2013, and B.S. in Applied Psychology from Nanjing Normal University in 2010. Prior to joining CSUF, Liu served as Assistant Professor in the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department at Henderson State University in Spring 2019. At The University of Texas at Austin, she worked as Teaching Assistant and Field Practicum Supervisor from 2013 to 2016, Lead Instructor for the Sport and Culture Immersion Program in Summers 2015 and 2016, and contributed to various undergraduate courses in physical education pedagogy and fitness assessment.
Liu's research focuses on physical education teacher education, pre-service physical education teachers’ perceptions and identities, health-related fitness testing, professional identity development, physical activity patterns, and assessment in physical education. Her scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed publications such as “Development of the Pre-service Physical Education Teachers’ Teacher Identity Scale” (Liu & Keating, European Physical Education Review, 2022), “Pre-service physical education teacher preparation for health-related fitness testing: A faculty perspective” (Liu et al., Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, 2023), “Cross-validation and modifications of the Perceived Mattering Questionnaire – Physical Education in Chinese inservice physical education teachers” (Zhang et al., Frontiers in Psychology, 2022), “An analysis of Chinese preservice physical education teachers’ beliefs of the physical education profession” (Keating et al., Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, 2021), and “Reliability and Concurrent Validity of Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ): A Systematic Review” (Keating et al., International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2019). She has received awards including two Virtual & Online Innovations & Curricular Enhancements Awards from CSUF in 2021 (Student Engagement and Assessment categories), the Janey & Melvin Lack Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Education (2018), and the Lee Hage & Joseph D. Jamail Endowed Scholarship in Education (2016). Liu has secured funding such as the CSUF 2023-2024 Junior/Senior Intramural Grant ($7,410) for studying PE student teachers’ concerns during field practicum and a SHAPE America Research Grant ($1,000). She serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education (20 submissions since 2020) and European Physical Education Review, and is a member of committees including the Future Scholarship Committee of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (2023-present).
