About Jiong

Jiong Lu is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his B.S. degree from the Department of Chemistry at Fudan University in 2007 and his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry at NUS in 2011. He completed postdoctoral research at the Department of Chemistry at NUS from 2011 to 2013 and at the Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley from 2013 to 2014. Lu joined NUS as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry in 2015, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2021, and to Full Professor in 2025. He serves as Assistant Head (International Relations and Infrastructure) and held the Dean’s Chair Professorship from 2023 to 2026.

Lu’s research centers on atomic-scale material design and quantum nanoscience, including atomically precise manufacturing of future materials, atomic-precision catalysts for renewable energy conversions and sustainable manufacturing, and atomic-scale quantum nanoscience. His representative publications include “Geminal-atom catalysis for cross-coupling” in Nature (2023), “Atomically-precise Vacancy-assembled Quantum Antidots” in Nature Nanotechnology (2023), “Ferromagnetic single-atom spin catalyst for boosting water splitting” in Nature Nanotechnology (2023), “Scalable two-step annealing method for preparing ultra-high-density single-atom catalyst libraries” in Nature Nanotechnology (2022), and “Printable two-dimensional superconducting monolayers” in Nature Materials (2021). He has received the National Research Foundation Competitive Research Programme (2023), Dean’s Chair Professorship at NUS (2023), Young Research Award at NUS (2022), Young Scientist Award at NUS Science (2021), Journal of Materials Chemistry A Emerging Investigators (2019), and Faculty Outstanding Scientist Award at NUS (2024). Lu is also an Associate Editor of Chemistry of Materials.
