Jo McCann is a Clinical Lecturer in Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) at the University of Otago's Dunedin School of Medicine, affiliated with the Department of Primary Health Care in Dunedin and the Department of General Practice and Rural Health. She holds qualifications including NDMDI, BHSc (Medical Imaging), DMU in General Ultrasound, and Postgraduate Diploma in Ultrasound (PgDipUS) from Unitec. With over 20 years of experience in medical ultrasound, McCann has worked across various clinical settings in public and private sectors, most recently serving as Acting Charge Sonographer at Te Whatu Ora - Hutt Valley, previously at Hutt Hospital. Her clinical focus is in sonography, and she convenes the GENA718 Generalist Medical Ultrasound paper, a full-year course in the Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound (CCPU) program, training healthcare professionals in generalist medical ultrasound skills.
In professional leadership, Jo McCann serves as President of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM), having previously held positions as Sonographer Director on the ASUM Board, Chair of ASUM New Zealand, and Chair of the DMU Board of Examiners. She is a member of the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) and the International Ultrasound Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (IUSOG). Additionally, she acts as Programme Manager for RAD-AID South Pacific, supporting ultrasound education and outreach in resource-limited regions, and contributes to the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) initiatives, including the Oceania Vision for educational impact through ultrasound training centres. Her research and scholarly outputs include co-authorship of 'Guidelines for Reprocessing Ultrasound Transducers: 2026' (Australasian Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, 2026) and 'The PEARLS Program: Point-of-Care Ultrasound for Emergency and Acute Care in Resource-Limited Settings' (Australasian Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, 2025, Vol. 28, No. 3). She has presented on topics such as 'Basic DVT Ultrasound' at the 2022 ASUM New Zealand Conference and 'HPV in the Head and Neck' at the 2019 ASUM New Zealand Annual Meeting. Recognized as New Zealand's 2024 Sonographer of the Year by the Australasian Sonographers Association, McCann advances ultrasound education, clinical governance, and global accessibility.
