Dr. Joachim Strand is a Lecturer in Media and Communication within the School of Social Sciences at The University of Western Australia, a position he assumed in 2024. His career in the university sector began in 2008 as a Post-Production Support Specialist at the School of Film and Television at Curtin University, where he worked until 2017. From 2019 to 2024, Strand served as a Lecturer in Film and Media Studies at SAE Creative Media Institute. He brings extensive experience in creative production, academia, and screen media to his current role. Strand's academic journey started with studies in Philosophy and Media and Communication at the University of Bergen in Norway. He then pursued higher degrees at Curtin University, earning a BA with First Class Honours in Film and TV/Journalism on 14 January 2005, a Master of Creative Arts in Screen Arts on 15 December 2006 with a thesis titled 'The Cinesthetic Montage of Music Video: Hearing the Image and Seeing the Sound,' a Graduate Certificate in Advertising on 11 December 2007, and culminating in a PhD in Cinema Studies on 26 January 2024 with the dissertation 'Writing Cinematic Sound: Audiovisual Phrasing and Screenwriting Practice.'
Strand's research specializations encompass screenwriting research, cinematic sound, sound in screenwriting, creative practice, and cinema studies. He welcomes inquiries for postgraduate supervision in areas such as screenwriting, cinematic sound, sound in screenwriting, and creative practice-based projects. In addition to his academic contributions, Strand applied his expertise as editor and sound designer for the documentary film 'The Best Battle' in 2021, which earned Official Selection status at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival. His scholarly work explores the intricate relationships between audiovisual elements in screen media, particularly the integration of sound and image in narrative and creative contexts, reflecting a commitment to advancing understanding in media and communication through both theoretical and practical lenses.
