Professor Joanne Hudson is a Professor in Sport and Exercise Sciences at Swansea University, formerly known as the University of Wales, Swansea, and serves as Head of the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She holds an Honours degree in Physical Education and Educational Studies and a PhD in Developmental Sport Psychology, both obtained from the University of Wales, Bangor. With over 20 years of experience teaching in higher education, she delivers modules such as Foundations in Exercise Science, Foundations of Sport Psychology, Exercise Science: Interventions and Applications, Health Related Exercise, and Sport and Exercise Science Research Dissertation. She is available for postgraduate supervision. Hudson chairs the BASES Education and Teaching Special Interest Group, leads the Behaviour Change Theme for the Welsh Institute of Physical Activity, Health and Sport, and has previously chaired the BPS Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology and the BPS Standing Committee for CPD.
Her research encompasses two primary themes: psychosocial aspects of physical activity and exercise among middle-aged and older adults, and reversal theory interpretations and applications to optimize well-being and exercise experiences. Expertise areas include sport and exercise psychology, older adults, and reversal theory. She holds prestigious accreditations including Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), BASES Fellow (FBASES), BPS Associate Fellow (AFBPsS), BPS Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist with HCPC registration, BASES Accreditation for Research, and Senior Fellow of Advance HE. Key publications include 'Inspiratory Muscle Training Enhances Recovery Post COVID-19: A Randomised Controlled Trial' (McNarry et al., 2022, European Respiratory Journal), 'Reversal Theory as a Complementary Perspective on Moment-to-Moment Variations in Motivation for Physical Activity' (Legrand, Hudson & Rhodes, Physiological Reviews), 'I Live a Kind of Shadow Life: Individual Experiences of COVID-19 Recovery' (Shelley et al., 2021, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health), and 'Moving Together: Increasing Physical Activity in Older Adults with an Intergenerational Technology-Based Intervention' (Knight et al., 2024, PLOS ONE). Her work contributes significantly to understanding exercise behavior, COVID-19 recovery, and motivational dynamics in sport and exercise contexts.
