Dr. Jodie L. Brinkmann is an associate professor of practice in Educational Leadership within the School of Education at Virginia Tech, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. She currently serves as program coordinator for the Educational Leadership Program, overseeing graduate students in the M.A. and Ed.S. programs for the Preparation of School Principals and Supervisors, and previously coordinated the Doctorate Program in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, including Ed.D. and Ph.D. tracks. Based at the Virginia Tech Richmond Center, she leads efforts to prepare school leaders, contributing to a program established in 1971 that balances research and practice to address contemporary administrative challenges. Prior to joining Virginia Tech as Assistant Professor of Practice in December 2019 and advancing to Associate Professor in July 2024, Dr. Brinkmann was an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at Longwood University from August 2015 to December 2019, where she taught undergraduate students in the Teacher Preparation Program. She brings twenty-nine years of K-12 public education experience, including roles as an elementary teacher, mathematics coach, assistant principal, and principal for over eleven years, notably as Head of Faculty at Echo Lake Elementary School in Henrico County Public Schools from July 2002 to June 2015.
Dr. Brinkmann's research interests include curriculum and instructional leadership, exceptional education focusing on collaboration and co-teaching, phenomenological research investigating K-12 education problems, assessment of instruction, and pre-service teacher preparation. She holds a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership. Her scholarly contributions feature publications such as the chapter 'Superintendents’ Leadership during the Pandemic' (2022), 'Factors That Affect the Performance of Refugee Students in Public Schools: An Illustration from Virginia, USA' (2021 and 2020), 'Crisis leadership and coaching: a tool for building school leaders' self-efficacy through self-awareness and reflection' (2021), 'Making a Difference: Increasing Elementary Pre-service Teachers’ Self-Efficacy in Mathematics' (2019), and 'Voices from the Field: Skill Sets Needed for Effective Collaboration and Co-teaching' (2012). Dr. Brinkmann participates in a USAID grant with 21PSTEM, collaborating with Egyptian professors on STEM School Principal Preparation Programs. She served as president of the Virginia Education Research Association (VERA), co-received the 2023 VERA Charles Clear Research Award for sustained contributions to educational research, and holds positions as treasurer and executive board member of the International Society for Educational Planning, along with recent service on the executive board of the Virginia Professors of Educational Leadership.
