Jodie Deakin is a Lecturer and Course Convenor in the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University. She holds qualifications including a Certificate in Communications (CertComm), Diploma in Financial Planning (DipFinPl), Bachelor of Nursing (BNurs), Graduate Certificate in Education (GradCertEd), and Master of Education (MEd). As a Registered Nurse (RN), Deakin brings extensive clinical experience from intensive care, peri-operative services, oncology, haematology, cancer care education, and clinical research trials, including multi-site randomised controlled trials in intensive care and acute medical-surgical settings. Currently pursuing a PhD at Griffith University, her doctoral research examines nurse education practices in the acute care setting, with a focus on pressure injury prevention (PIP) education for hospitalised patients through the multi-method PALLADIAN study.
Deakin is passionate about teaching nursing at undergraduate and master's levels, emphasising psychological safety to enhance student learning and capacity in the profession. Her research specialisations include nurse education practices, patient health literacy, pressure injury prevention, collaborative co-design with nurses and health consumers, knowledge translation, shared decision-making, and mixed-methods research. Key publications encompass 'Prophylactic dressings to prevent sacral pressure injuries in adult patients admitted to intensive care units: A three-arm feasibility randomized controlled trial' (2024), 'The effect of pressure injury prevention care bundles on pressure injuries in hospital patients: A complex intervention systematic review and meta-analysis' (2024), 'Variations in sacral sub-epidermal moisture in adult intensive care patients during the first three days of admission' (2024), 'Medical and surgical nurses' approach to patient pressure injury prevention education: An integrative review' (2023), 'Variations in sacral sub-epidermal moisture measurements in hospital medical and surgical patients: A longitudinal observational sub-study' (2023), and 'An education intervention care bundle to improve hospitalised patients’ pressure injury prevention knowledge: a before and after study' (2020). As an emerging nurse researcher, she contributes to advancing patient safety and healthcare improvements.
