About Joe

Jose-Luis (Joe) Iglesias is an Assistant Professor of Management in the School of Business Administration at the University of South Carolina Aiken. He earned a Doctor of Business Administration with a specialization in Strategy from the University of Florida, completing his dissertation titled "Failing to Pull the Plug: The Role of CEO Regulatory Focus in Divestment in the U.S. Retail Industry," co-chaired by Dr. Debanjan Mitra and Dr. Gwendolyn Lee. His educational background also encompasses a Master of Business Administration from Mackenzie University in Sao Paulo, Brazil; a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Applied Statistics and Data Analytics from Kennesaw State University; a Bachelor of Business Administration from UNIFACS in Salvador, Brazil; and two semesters of a Master of Science in Organizational Behavior at New York University before pursuing doctoral studies.

Prior to USCA, Iglesias held a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Management position at the University of South Carolina Beaufort from 2018 to 2024, where he taught Strategic Management, Business Research Methods, Organizational Behavior, Principles of Management and Leadership, Introduction to Healthcare Management, and Healthcare Operations Management. He previously served as tenure-track Assistant Professor of Management at Viterbo University (2016-2018), Associate Lecturer of Management at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (2015-2016), and clinical professor of management at Ibirapuera University and UniABC University in Brazil. His professional experience includes management consulting in Brazil and the US (2011-2015 and 2000-2004), Chief Strategy Officer at Carbinox S.A. (1999-2000), and founder and senior consultant at Insight Consultoria Empresarial (1995-1999). Iglesias's research interests encompass strategic change, entrepreneurship, management education, international business, and environmental, social, and governance topics. His refereed publications include "Resisting pulling the plug: the role of CEO regulatory focus and board independence in store closure activity" in the International Journal of Organizational Analysis (2023), "Strategic consensus in top management teams: The role of status hierarchy, firm performance, and a culture of dissent" (with A.E. Iglesias) in the American Journal of Management (2022), and "Empowering waste pickers in Brazil: A case study of reverse logistics" in the International Journal of Business and Management Studies (2022). He has presented at the 2024 International Conference on Psychology, 2023 MOBTS Conference, and Western Academy of Management Conference. Awards include Student Organization Advisor of the Year at USC Beaufort (2022), Sea Islands Institute Research Grant (2021, $4,917.39), and Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Midwest Academy of Management (2016). He has contributed to service through advising business clubs, committee memberships, and conference reviewing.
