About Joel

Joel Stiebale is Professor of Empirical Industrial Economics at the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE), Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf's Faculty of Business and Economics, a position held since October 2014. He earned his PhD (Dr. rer. oec.) in Economics from Ruhr University Bochum in February 2010 following doctoral studies there and at the Rhine-Westphalia Institute for Economic Research (RWI). He previously obtained an MSc (Diplom Volkswirt) in Economics from the University of Heidelberg in November 2005, which included a visiting student period at the University of Massachusetts, Boston from August 2003 to June 2004. His professional career includes Assistant Professor in Industrial Economics at the University of Nottingham from August 2011 to September 2014, Postdoctoral Researcher at RWI in Essen from March 2010 to July 2011, and Researcher and doctoral candidate at RWI from December 2005 to February 2010.

Stiebale's academic interests center on empirical industrial organization, international trade and multinational firms, economics of innovation, applied microeconometrics, and firms in developing countries. Key publications include “Rising Markups and the Role of Consumer Preferences” with H. Döpper, A. MacKay, and N. Miller (Journal of Political Economy, 2025), “Robots and the Rise of European Superstar Firms” with J. Südekum and N. Woessner (International Journal of Industrial Organization, 2024), “Mergers and Market Power: Evidence from Rivals’ Responses in European Markets” with F. Szücs (RAND Journal of Economics, 2022), “Import Competition and Vertical Integration: Evidence from India” with D. Vencappa (Journal of Development Economics, 2022), “Cross-border M&A and Innovative Activity of Acquiring and Target Firms” (Journal of International Economics, 2016), and “How Mergers Affect Innovation: Theory and Evidence” with J. Haucap and A. Rasch (International Journal of Industrial Organization, 2019). He has received the Robert F. Lanzillotti Prize for Best Paper in Antitrust Economics (2023), Antitrust Writing Award for best academic article in the mergers category (2019), Outstanding Reviewer Award from the International Journal of Industrial Organization (2018), and several Rhine Westphalian Institute for Economic Research prizes. Stiebale contributes to policy as a member of the Economic Advisory Group on Competition Policy (since 2024), the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s Economic Expert Panel (since 2024), and Fellow Economist at DG Grow, European Commission (since 2024), and has served as Visiting Professor at Vienna University of Economics and Business.
