About Johan

Johan Bylund is Professor and subject representative at the Department of Oral Microbiology and Immunology, Institute of Odontology, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, affiliated with Odontology Section 3. His professional contact details include telephone numbers +46 31-786 50 18 and +46 766-18 50 18. Bylund's research centers on the biology of oral inflammation, a fundamental host defense reaction triggered by microbial invasion or tissue damage. Neutrophils serve as key effector cells in acute inflammation, rapidly recruited to infection sites to phagocytose and kill invading microbes in the oral cavity and elsewhere. The work investigates how neutrophil activity is regulated by interactions with other immune cells and microbial factors, including intracellular oxidant production. Dysregulated neutrophil responses can lead to tissue damage and contribute to chronic inflammatory diseases, making this area critical for understanding oral health and immunity.

As project manager for the "Biology of oral inflammation" initiative, Bylund oversees studies funded by Vetenskapsrådet, TUA/ALNy, Gustaf V:s 80-årsfond, and Hjärt-Lungfonden. He has produced extensive publications on neutrophil biology and oral microbiology, including "Intracellular neutrophil oxidants: From laboratory curiosity to clinical relevance" (Journal of Immunology, 2019), "Short chain fatty acids released by Fusobacterium nucleatum trigger neutrophil extracellular trap formation" (Cellular Microbiology, 2021), "A neutrophil subset defined by CD177 expression is active in inflammatory arthritis" (Journal of Leukocyte Biology, 2021), "Formyl peptide derived lipopeptides disclose differences between formyl peptide receptor 2 and 3 homo- and heterodimers" (2020), "Antimicrobial host defence peptides of human neutrophils" (2008), and "Burkholderia cenocepacia induces neutrophil necrosis" (2005). In 2022, he received a research grant from Vetenskapsrådet, recognizing his contributions among 30 selected medicine and health researchers at the university. Bylund participates as a speaker at events like NYSCO 2024 and serves on doctoral thesis examining committees.
