John Bellettiere is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology in the Division of Epidemiology at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, University of California, San Diego. Holding a PhD in Epidemiology, an MA in Economics, and an MPH in Behavioral Science, he focuses his research on behavioral epidemiology and chronic disease prevention. His work examines cardiovascular disease epidemiology, sedentary behavior, physical activity, and secondhand smoke exposure from marijuana and tobacco, often using observational epidemiologic designs, randomized clinical trials, and accelerometry data from cohorts of older adults.
Bellettiere's professional trajectory includes a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at UCSD from September 2017 to September 2019, the role of Principal Investigator at the Center for Behavioral Epidemiology and Community Health from September 2011 to June 2020, and Data Scientist and Research Associate at the same center from August 2011 to September 2015. He has published extensively in leading journals, with key papers including "Sedentary behavior and cardiovascular disease in older women: the OPACH study" (Circulation, 2019), "Evaluation of social isolation, loneliness, and cardiovascular disease among older women in the US" (JAMA Network Open, 2022), "Independent associations between sedentary behaviors and mental, cognitive, physical, and functional health among older adults in retirement communities" (Journals of Gerontology Series A, 2016), "Association of light physical activity measured by accelerometry and incidence of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease in older women" (JAMA Network Open, 2019), and "Accelerometer-measured physical activity and mortality in women aged 63 to 99" (Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 2018). These contributions have illuminated the health impacts of daily activity patterns, particularly in older women, influencing strategies for chronic disease mitigation. In 2020-2021, he was honored as “Professor of the Year” in the CREST/MAS program.
