Emeritus Professor John Carter is a prominent figure at the University of Sydney Law School, where he holds emeritus status following a distinguished career spanning over three decades. He earned his BA and LLB from the University of Sydney in 1975 and 1977 respectively, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. Returning to Australia, he joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Sydney as a lecturer in 1978. Throughout his tenure, he taught a wide array of subjects in the LLB program, including Contracts, Commercial Law I, Advanced Contracts, Personal Property, Leases, Advanced Remedies, Sale of Goods, and Consumer Law. In the LLM program, his courses encompassed Commercial Law and International Commercial Arbitration. Administratively, he served as Director of Postgraduate Studies in Law from 1989 to 1991 and as Head of Department from 2001 to 2003, before retiring in 2013.

Key publications include Carter on Contract (eight editions since 1997), Contract Law in Australia (seven editions, latest 2020, co-authored with Wayde Karmy-Bray), and The Construction of Commercial Contracts (second edition 2022, with Greg Tolhurst). In 1988, he founded the Journal of Contract Law and acted as its General Editor until 2020. From 2003 to 2020, he consulted for Herbert Smith Freehills.
