John Dean is a Senior Professional Practice Fellow in Clinical Skills at the University of Otago Christchurch Simulation Centre and Associate Dean (Student Affairs) for the University of Otago, Christchurch, within the Faculty of Medicine. He holds qualifications including a BA (Open), Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing (CPIT), Registered Nurse (RN), and Certificate in Education (Adult). Dean completed his nurse training in Portsmouth, England, in 1980, followed by several years as Charge Nurse in the Lincoln Accident and Emergency Department. He then obtained his Cert. Ed (Adult) and registered as a Nurse Tutor with the English National Board for Nursing and Midwifery. Moving to the York School of Nursing, he became Head of the Department of Post Registration Studies and was seconded as project manager to coordinate the integration of nursing and midwifery education into the University of York. During this time, he developed interests in open and distance learning, collaborating with the Open University and Macmillan Open Learning.
After relocating to New Zealand in 2000, Dean worked for five years as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Accident and Emergency Department at Christchurch Public Hospital. Subsequently, he served as Research Coordinator for the Professor of Nephrology and Project Coordinator for the Emergency Department 'Models of Care' initiative. In 2007, he took up the role of Rural Nurse Specialist in Franz Josef, South Westland. He has taught on the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education at the Christchurch College of Education. Dean was appointed to the Simulation Centre in January 2011 and continues clinical practice as a rural nurse in Canterbury. He co-convenes the Clinical Skills Vertical Module for Year 6 medical students. His recent publications include "Consent to medical student teaching: an observational, cross-sectional study exploring the patient view" (BMC Medical Education, 2024), "Simulation in New Zealand: what have you done for me lately?" (New Zealand Medical Journal, 2024), and contributions to conference proceedings on post-scenario debriefing and clinical skills. Dean has presented at conferences such as the New Zealand Association for Simulation in Healthcare (NZASH) and the International Clinical Skills Conference.
