Clinical Associate Professor John Edmond is affiliated with the Department of Medicine (Dunedin) at the University of Otago, Faculty of Medicine, Division of Health Sciences. He possesses an impressive array of qualifications: BSc, MB ChB (1996 from the University of Bristol), MD, PGDipMedEd, MRCP (UK 1999), CCT (UK Cardiology 2009), FRCP (Edinburgh 2010), and FRACP (2017). His professional career includes post-fellowship training at Green Lane Hospital, Auckland (2000-2003), specialist cardiology training through the South West Training Scheme in the UK (Bristol and Taunton, 2003-2008), and serving as Consultant Cardiologist at Weston and Bristol Royal Infirmary (2008-2013). Today, he practices as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist with Southern District Health Board. At the University of Otago, he was promoted to Clinical Associate Professor in December 2025. He holds key leadership positions including Director of Postgraduate Teaching and member of the Department of Medicine Executive Committee, Co-Director of Clinical Skills within the Faculty of Medicine's Education Unit, and Chair of the MBChB Curriculum Committee's Clinical Skills, Diagnostics, and Therapeutics Subcommittee.
Edmond's research focuses on general cardiology, interventional cardiology, bradycardia pacing, and quality improvement initiatives. As an Associate Professor in the Cardiology Research Unit, he contributes to significant studies in cardiovascular health. His scholarly output includes peer-reviewed articles such as Chan et al. (2020) 'The impact of a national COVID-19 lockdown on acute coronary syndrome hospitalisations in New Zealand (ANZACS-QI 55)' published in The Lancet Regional Health: Western Pacific, and Stewart et al. (2021) 'High flow oxygen and risk of mortality in patients with a suspected acute coronary syndrome: Pragmatic, cluster randomised, crossover trial' in the BMJ. Additional contributions encompass conference abstracts like MacKenzie, Wilkins, & Edmond (2021) comparing TAVI and SAVI outcomes in Heart, Lung & Circulation, and Chan et al.
