Dr John Hale is an Honorary Fellow in the Department of English and Linguistics at the University of Otago. He holds the degrees MA (Oxon), PhD (Edin), DipEd (Durh), and LittD (Otago). His expertise lies in Renaissance literature, with a particular focus on John Milton. Internationally recognised as an expert on the seventeenth-century poet John Milton, he has explored themes such as Milton's Latin writings, the impact of multilingualism on his style, scriptural theology, and performances in genres during Milton's Cambridge years from 1625 to 1632.
Hale has produced seven books on Milton and numerous other publications. Key works include the editing and translation of John Milton, De Doctrina Christiana for the Oxford University Press Complete Works of John Milton (vol. 8, 2012), which won the John T. Shawcross Award of the Milton Society of America; Milton and the Manuscript of De Doctrina Christiana (with Gordon Campbell, Thomas Corns, and Fiona Tweedie; Oxford University Press, 2007), recipient of the James Holly Hanford Award; Milton's Scriptural Theology (2019); Milton's Cambridge Latin: Performing in the Genres 1625-1632 (2005); Milton as Multilingual: Selected Essays 1982-2004 (2005); Milton's Languages: The Impact of Multilingualism on Style (1997); and John Milton: Latin Writings: A Selection, edited and translated (1998/1999). He has also authored The Shakespeare of the Comedies: A Multiple Approach (1996) and edited Sonnets of Four Centuries 1500-1900: An Anthology for Students of English Literature, Otago Studies in English II (1992). His first essay on Milton appeared in a 1980 Festschrift, followed by contributions to journals such as Philological Quarterly and Renaissance Studies. Hale's lifetime contributions earned him the Milton Society of America's Honoured Scholar award in 2020, along with plaques for distinguished essays, books, and editions since 1988. His scholarly editions and analyses have profoundly influenced Milton studies worldwide.
