John Noonan serves as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Agribusiness Management within the School of Molecular and Life Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. He graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and holds additional qualifications including a Diploma of Education, a Post Graduate Diploma of Science in Agriculture, and a Diploma of Financial Counselling. His professional career encompasses agribusiness, farm business management, risk management, and strategic planning, with extensive roles in government and private sectors across projects worldwide and throughout Western Australia from Esperance to the Kimberley. Having spent his early years on farms in rural Western Australia, Noonan brings practical insights to his academic and consultancy work.
At Curtin University, Noonan leads the Safe Quality Food (SQF) program, overseeing the development of undergraduate, graduate, and external training programs. He previously acted as Extension and Communication Leader for the grains research centre initiatives, promoting the transfer of research outcomes to industry. With broad experience as a food safety and quality systems consultant, researcher, and trainer spanning pre-farm gate inputs to retail, his research specializes in environmental supply chain management and food quality assurance in Australian grain and vegetable industries. Key publications include 'Environmental Supply Chain Management in Australian Grain Industries: A Life Cycle Assessment Approach' (2011), 'Walking the Walk on Environmental Assurance: A Case Study of Vegetable Growers in Western Australia' (2011), 'Who Backs Up Credence Claims? Roles for Government as a Competent Authority in Assuring Quality Attributes' (2011), 'Global Trends in Food Quality: An Exploratory Study in Fresh Produce Supply Chains' (2009), and 'Assessing the Role of a Four-Stage Approach for Improving the Compatibility of Environmental Management Systems and Quality Assurance' (2007). Noonan's scholarship has accumulated 37 citations. He received the Vice-Chancellor's Strategic Planning Award in 2012 and holds memberships in the International Farm Management Association, International Food and Agribusiness Management Association, and Australia Pacific Extension Network. His contributions extend to programs like the Farm Business Resilience Program, fostering resilient farm businesses amid climate challenges.
