Dr. John Pike is a lecturer at the AU Pathways College, Adelaide University, within Education Futures. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of South Australia, completed in 2020, with a thesis titled 'The cultural value of digital games and play' that analyzed media discourses of digital games. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from 2006 to 2007 and a Bachelor of Arts in Professional and Creative Communication from 2002 to 2005 at the University of South Australia.
Pike teaches courses centered on digital literacy and academic skills, including Digital Literacy: Screen, Web and New Media and Future Ideas: Information and the Internet. His prior teaching experience encompasses Introduction to Academic Life at UniSA College, Games: Industry, Culture & Aesthetics, Integrated Communication Planning, and Ideas, Innovation and Communication at UniSA Creative, as well as Critical Approaches to Online Learning and Communication Research Methods at UniSA Online. His research specializations include the use of digital technology and generative AI in teaching, learning, and assessment, along with artificial intelligence, communication technology and digital media studies, digital humanities, pedagogy, and sociology and social studies of science and technology. He co-facilitates the generative AI special interest group of the National Association of Enabling Educators of Australia. Key publications feature 'Tensions between generative AI principles and practice in equity education' with T. Ulpen (Práxis Educacional, 2025), 'Reluctant, Ambivalent and Progressive: Educators' attitudes towards the use of generative artificial intelligence in Enabling Education' with T. James et al. (Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice, 2025), 'Building critical AI literacy and fit for purpose application of generative AI in digital literacy: screen, web and new media' with J. Stokes and T. Folber (conference paper, 2025), 'Future ready? Engaging learners and building transferable skills through authentic assessment and digital literacy' with J. Stokes (2022), and 'Usage not abusage: promoting language tolerance through historical knowledge' with M. H. Stephens (2008). Pike received the Early Career Teacher Award from UniSA Education Futures in 2024 and was nominated for the UniSA Unstoppable Early Career Teacher Award that year.
