Great Professor!
Professor John Redmond is Emeritus Professor in the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney, where he served as Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning from late 2010. During his tenure, the school achieved the top ranking in Australia for Architecture and Built Environment in the QS World University Rankings in multiple years, including 2016, 2017, and 2018. He oversaw the recruitment of 13 new teaching and research staff in 2017 to address expanding research interests and a 35 percent increase in student numbers. Under his leadership, the school marked its centenary in 2018 with a series of events and received significant philanthropic support, such as a major donation from Susan and Garry Rothwell to establish artist residencies and fund PhD stipends in design.
Prior to joining the University of Sydney, Professor Redmond held key leadership roles in design education. He was Foundation Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Monash University for 16 years, transforming post-merger art and design programs into an internationally recognized faculty. There, he oversaw the development of the award-winning Art & Design building by Denton Corker Marshall, chaired the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) and its new galleries at the Caulfield Campus, introduced a studio-based PhD program, and directed the introduction of Monash's Architecture program, the first new one in Australia in 30 years. He also established the Monash Estates Committee, which appointed a master planner and initiated transformations of the Clayton and Caulfield campuses. Earlier, at the University of New South Wales, he served as Foundation Head of the Department of Industrial Design in the Faculty of the Built Environment, founding Australia's first Masters program in Industrial Design and a multidisciplinary Bachelor of Industrial Design program. An industrial and environmental designer with extensive industry experience in product research, design, and development—including automation equipment, complex engineering systems, consumer products, and design intellectual property—Redmond holds a BA (CSAD), MA (RCA), and DipID(Eng) (CSAD). He is FRSA and FDIA, inducted into the Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame. His contributions include editing Futureground Design Research Society conference proceedings (2004), chapters on industrial design (2004) and design practices (2001), and the foreword to Sydney School: Formative Moments in Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney (2018). His research interests encompass industrial design, communication design, environmental design, and architecture.
