Mr. John Scanelli is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Surgery and Critical Care, Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago. As a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Dunedin Hospital with Te Whatu Ora Southern, he provides comprehensive orthopaedic services to the Southern region. Scanelli obtained his MD from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 2007 and completed orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center from 2007 to 2012. He achieved board certification from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2016. His advanced training encompasses a Joint Replacement Fellowship at Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic in Alexandria, Virginia; the Dunedin Arthroplasty and Trauma Fellowship; a fellowship at North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre in Sydney, Australia; and additional experience in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.
Scanelli's expertise centers on hip replacement, knee replacement, revision hip and knee replacement, and knee arthroscopy. He holds memberships in the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, serving on its council since 2021, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Notable publications include co-authorship of 'Tissue Anchor Use in Arthroscopic Glenohumeral Surgery' in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (2012), contributions to research on the anterior muscle-sparing approach for total hip arthroplasty (2013), and involvement in studies evaluating the Morscher Press-Fit Acetabular Component (2017). He has also contributed clinically to Best Practice Journal bulletins on osteoarthritis management and the role of exercise (2023), collaborating with University of Otago colleagues.
