Dr John Williams is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Marketing within the Otago Business School at the University of Otago. He earned his BCom, PGDipCom, MCom, DipGrad (Statistics), and PhD from the University of Otago, where his doctoral thesis developed a new statistical technique combining cluster analysis and regression. Williams began his academic journey as a Marketing student at Otago in 1984 and has been a staff member in the department since 1996, spanning nearly three decades of contributions to teaching courses such as consumer behaviour and research methods, and advancing scholarly research.
His research specializations include sustainable consumption, energy cultures, consumer behaviour, marketing ethics, tourism, research methods, philosophy of science, digital marketing, data science, and marketing theory. As a member of the Research Network for Sustainable Business, Williams has produced influential work cited over 5,700 times according to Google Scholar. Notable publications encompass 'Community issues and resident opinions of tourism' (2001, Annals of Tourism Research), 'Energy cultures: A framework for understanding energy behaviours' (2010, Energy Policy), 'Trust considerations on attitudes towards online purchasing: The moderating effect of privacy and security concerns' (2010, Journal of Business Research), 'The service-dominant logic of marketing and marketing ethics' (2011, Journal of Business Ethics), and 'The positive role of labelling on consumers’ perceived behavioural control and intention to purchase organic food' (2020, Journal of Cleaner Production).
