Johnson George is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety within the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Monash University. He holds a BPharm, MPharm, and PhD (2005). After completing his PhD, he undertook a postdoctoral position at the Prescribing Research Group in the School of Pharmacy at Robert Gordon University, Scotland, where his work focused on prescribing initiatives by UK pharmacists and medication use and safety issues among the elderly. He returned to Monash University in 2007 and has since progressed in his academic career, supervising research students and coordinating courses such as PHR2041 and PHR4012. He teaches topics including chronic respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD, nicotine dependence, and point-of-care testing.
George's research interests centre on medication use and safety in the elderly, developing and testing new models of care for managing chronic conditions, and assessing and promoting treatment adherence in patients with chronic diseases. His work particularly addresses chronic respiratory conditions, smoking cessation, and dementia risk reduction in primary care. He leads multidisciplinary health services research projects, including the Australian Primary caRe Initiative for mediCine use Optimisation and safeTy (APRICOT), Enhancing the Management of Chronic Respiratory Conditions in Primary Care funded by the Medical Research Future Fund, and HAPPI MIND. He has produced 169 research outputs, including 140 articles. Key publications include 'Environmental impact of inhaled medicines: A Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand position statement' (Respirology, 2025), 'Identifying dementia risk profiles for targeted interventions: A latent class analysis of at-risk middle-aged Australians' (Alzheimer's & Dementia, 2025), 'Impact of advice to quit smoking on rating of care and anticipation of stigma in primary care' (Primary Health Care Research and Development, 2025), and 'Varenicline and Nicotine Replacement Therapy for Smoking Cessation' (JAMA Network Open, 2024). His contributions have earned him the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Early Career Researcher Award (2009, joint), Teaching Excellence Award (2018), and Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence in a Priority Area (2018).
