Professor Jon McCormack is a professor in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, with a joint appointment in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. He is the founder and director of SensiLab, a creative technologies research laboratory. McCormack earned his PhD in Computer Science from Monash University in 2004, Bachelor of Science with Honours in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from Monash in 1987, Graduate Diploma of Art (Film and Television) from Swinburne University of Technology in 1986, and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from Monash in 1985. His career includes previous roles as ARC Future Fellow (2017-2021), ARC Australian Research Fellow (2010-2015), Australia Council for the Arts Media Arts Fellow, Artist-in-Residence at Ars Electronica Future Lab (2011-2012), and Visiting Research Fellow at Goldsmiths University of London (2010-2012).
McCormack's research focuses on computational creativity, generative art, design and music, evolutionary systems, artificial life, electronic media art, human-machine interfaces, creative artificial intelligence, and interaction design. He has received numerous awards, including the 2022 Good Design Award Gold Winner in Design Research for Blundstone Intelligent Footwear for Healthcare, 2022 Designers Australia Awards Use Category Award of Merit, and prizes at Ars Electronica and other international competitions. Key publications include the edited volume "Computers and Creativity" (Springer, 2012, co-edited with Mark d'Inverno), "Impossible Nature: The Art of Jon McCormack" (2004), and recent works such as "Building Simulations with Generative Artificial Intelligence" (2024) and "Transhuman Ansambl: a system for immersive and performative experience of music heritage" (2025). His artworks have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Gallery (Liverpool), ACM SIGGRAPH, Prix Ars Electronica, and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. McCormack serves on the Faculty of Information Technology Research Committee and has supervised numerous PhD students.
