Jonathan Beagle is Professor of History in the Department of History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics at Western New England University. He serves as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Director of the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. Beagle earned a BA from Saint Cloud State University, an MA from the University of Rhode Island, and a PhD from the University of New Hampshire. His doctoral dissertation, “The Cradle of Liberty: Faneuil Hall and the Political Culture of Eighteenth-Century Boston,” was completed under the advisement of Eliga H. Gould. For his master's thesis, he wrote “Waves of Change: Women, Work, War, and Wedlock in Colonial Newport, Rhode Island, 1750-1775,” which examined gender relations in colonial Newport on the eve of the American Revolution.
Jonathan Beagle received the 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award at Western New England University. His publications include the books Boston: A Pictorial Celebration (Sterling Publishing, 2006) and Boston: A Visual History (Charlesbridge, 2013). He published the article “Remembering Peter Faneuil: Yankees, Huguenots, and Ethnicity in Boston, 1743-1900” in The New England Quarterly (2002). Beagle contributed book reviews to The New England Quarterly, including reviews of Building Victorian Boston: The Architecture of Gridley J. F. Bryant by Roger Reed (2008) and Henry Austin: In Every Variety of Architectural Style by James F. O'Gorman (2009). He also reviewed Stories of Independence: Identity, Ideology, and History in Eighteenth-Century America in the Journal of American History (2006) and The Varieties of Political Experience in Eighteenth-Century America in The American Historical Review (2005). Beagle has participated in university events such as presentations for the Center for Teaching and Learning on managing classroom discussions and commencement ceremonies presenting candidates.
