Professor Jonathan Karpelowsky is Professor of Paediatric Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He is an academic paediatric surgeon with his primary appointment at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, where he commenced specialist practice in 2010. Additional appointments include Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Westmead Private Hospital. His academic qualifications include MBBCh, FCS, Certificate in Paediatric Surgery, FRACS, and PhD. Prior to specialization, he trained in thoracic surgery and completed adult and paediatric surgical fellowships in 2006, followed by his PhD. Karpelowsky maintains active clinical interests in minimally invasive surgery, thoracic conditions of childhood, paediatric surgical oncology, and transplantation in children.
His research specializations encompass paediatric solid tumours with a focus on immunotherapy for refractory cases, thoracic surgical research including chest wall reconstruction and long-term follow-up of oesophageal atresia and diaphragmatic hernias, tissue oxygen monitoring in paediatric patients, and randomized trials in childhood surgical conditions. On Google Scholar, he has 2423 citations and an h-index of 28. Key publications include "Management for intussusception in children" (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2017), "The effect of standardized feeding protocol on early outcome of neonates born with gastroschisis: A multi-center randomized control trial" (Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 2021), and "A Surgical Approach to Pulmonary Metastasis in Children" (Seminars in Pediatric Surgery, 2021). Karpelowsky contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate education at the University of Sydney, supervising Masters and Doctoral candidates. He serves as Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Paediatric Surgery overseeing training across Australia and New Zealand, member of the Sydney Children’s Network Human Research Ethics Committee, executive committee member of the Australasian Association of Paediatric Surgery, and has led working parties for the Section of Academic Surgery on research requirements for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
