About Jonathan

Professor Jonathan Tammam is a professor in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Oxford Brookes University, with a focus on Nutrition and Dietetics. He holds a BSc in Applied Biology, an MSc with distinction in Nutrition and Dietetics, and a PhD in intermediary metabolism. Tammam is a Registered Dietitian (RD), Registered Nutritionist (RNutr), and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He joined Oxford Brookes University in 2019 as Programme Lead in Nutrition and Dietetics and Director of the Centre for Nutrition and Health, within the School of Sport, Nutrition and Allied Health Professions. His career encompasses education, applied research, and commercial consultancy. Tammam serves as an external examiner for the MSc in Public Health Nutrition at Liverpool John Moores University and as a mentor for the Council of Deans Leadership programme. He is a member of the Nutrition Society and the British Dietetics Association.

Tammam's research specializations include public health nutrition, nutrition interventions, randomised controlled trials, quantitative research, prison food, adolescent diet, and dietetics. His interests cover nutritional needs of prisoners and adolescents, randomised controlled trials in prison and school settings on supplementary nutrition's effect on behaviour, prison food provision compared to dietary guidelines, TV food advertising misalignment with healthy eating, gender disparity in the Nutrition and Dietetics profession, and malnutrition screening in clinical dietetics. Key publications are 'A randomized controlled trial in healthy participants to compare the insulinogenic effects of whey protein and pea protein co-ingested with glucose' (PLoS ONE, 2026), 'Barriers to timely nutrition support in cancer patients: a scoping review' (Nutrition in Clinical Practice, 2025), 'Effects of frozen red dragon fruit consumption on metabolic markers in healthy subjects and individuals at risk of type 2 diabetes' (Nutrients, 2025), 'A Systematic Review of the effect of Dietary and Nutritional Interventions on the Behaviours and Mental Health of Prisoners' (British Journal of Nutrition, 2024), and 'The effect of Niacin on inflammatory markers and adipokines: A systematic review and meta-analysis of interventional studies' (European Journal of Nutrition, 2024). As co-applicant, he secured Research Excellence Awards funding in 2021 and 2022 for projects on malnutrition in overweight cancer patients. Tammam has presented at national and international conferences, spoken at the All Party Parliamentary Group, and contributed to radio interviews and press conferences.
