Dr. Joowon Im is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she serves as Coordinator of Sustainable Urban Design. She holds a Ph.D. in Architecture and Design Research from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design and Seoul National University in Korea, and a Bachelor of Arts in Space Design from Ewha Womans University in Korea. Prior to academia, she worked at landscape architecture firms in Korea, including profit and nonprofit organizations, and at ACOM (formerly EDAW) in New York, developing city comprehensive plans, landscape improvement plans, and sustainable community designs.
Dr. Im's research specializes in urban sustainability, green infrastructure, green streets, and GIS applications in transportation and environmental justice. Key publications include 'Green Streets to Serve Urban Sustainability: Benefits and Typology' in Sustainability (2019), cited 57 times; 'A Study of the Planning and Design Process of Green Infrastructure Focusing on Green Street Approach' (2018); and 'GIS Training in Transportation and Environmental Justice for Underserved High School Students' (2022). She has received grants including a National Institute for Transportation and Communities award of $80,659 for GIS training and a UTA Research Enhancement Program Grant in 2018-19 for community engagement in green infrastructure planning in Downtown Arlington. Her leadership has led students to national honors, such as the ASLA Student Honor Award (2022) and Texas ASLA Student Design Awards (2023). Dr. Im is a licensed ASLA member, UTA ACUE Fellow, and Certified Peer Observer, contributing to sustainable urban development through education, community workshops, and design projects.
