Dr José Sakakibara is a Lecturer in the School of Law and Business, Business Sydney, at the University of Notre Dame Australia, where he serves as the National Discipline Coordinator for Marketing and Public Relations. Prior to entering academia, he built a successful career in senior managerial marketing positions across consumer goods, media, hospitality, and agribusiness industries in Brazil. This experience prompted his relocation to Australia, where he pursued advanced studies, earning a PhD from the University of Wollongong, a Master of Management from the University of Technology Sydney, a Bachelor of Management from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, and a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching.
Sakakibara's research specializations include not-for-profit marketing, exploring individual donors’ attitudes and behaviors toward fundraising to support organizations' financial independence; scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education, with a focus on business and marketing education to improve student performance and retention through work-integrated learning, cooperative learning, and blended learning; and interactive marketing, digital marketing, and customer relationship management. He currently coordinates courses including Business Research Methods, E-Marketing, Principles of Marketing, and International Marketing. In 2017, he was awarded a University Letter of Commendation for Teaching Performance Evaluation and Course Content Evaluation scores in Business Research Methods. His key publications encompass ‘Developing a Multiple-Request Individual Giving Model’ (2012, with Elias Kyriazis and Jennifer Algie, ANZMAC); ‘Feeding Two Birds with One Seed: Collaborating with Not-Profit Organisations and Raising Awareness About Social Issues Amongst University Students’ (2016, with Kyriazis, Bressan, and Bavaro, ANZTSR); ‘Graduate Certificate in Higher Education: from Local Scholarship to Changing Teaching Practice at the Australian Catholic University (ACU)’ (2015, with Tina Bavaro, ISSOTL); and ‘Competitive Fundraising Strategies of the Not for Profit Sector in the New Century: Raising Supporters or Drift Netting for Dollars?’ (2010, with Janet Chew, ANZTSR). As Chair of the Australia and New Zealand Third Sector Research (ANZTSR), he oversees the peer-reviewed journal Third Sector Review, included in the Excellence in Research for Australia list, and holds membership in the Australian Marketing Institute. He also serves as a member and rescuer for NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service (WIRES).
