Jose van den Akker holds a PhD, a Master of Education Studies (MEdSt), and an Advanced Diploma in Transpersonal Art Therapy (AdvDipTrATh). At Curtin University, he served as an Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine, and as a Faculty Member in the Centre for Aboriginal Studies within the Faculty of Health Sciences. His academic appointments at Curtin involved research contributions to nursing, midwifery education, and cross-cultural studies.
Van den Akker's research specializations and academic interests include art-based learning, experiential learning, cross-cultural education, online learning communities, psychotherapeutic processes, creativity, group dynamics, psychoeducation, and transpersonal psychology. Key publications include "Australian nursing and midwifery educators delivering evidence-based education in Tanzania: A qualitative study" (Nurse Education in Practice, 2016), co-authored with Shelley Gower, Mark Jones, Jaya A.R. Dantas, and Ravani Duggan, which examined the experiences of Curtin educators delivering evidence-based teaching abroad. These publications highlight his focus on innovative, creative approaches to education and cultural dynamics, with a total of 24 citations.
