Joseph Hii serves as a Research Analyst at the University of Otago within the Department of Women's and Children's Health, Dunedin School of Medicine. He is affiliated with the Paediatric and Child Health section at Dunedin Hospital and holds the position of Research Analyst in the New Zealand Mortality Review Data Group (NZMRDG). The NZMRDG produces biennial reports on child and youth mortality for individuals aged 28 days to 24 years, as well as perinatal and maternal mortality data, contributing to national health insights in Aotearoa New Zealand. Hii is also involved in the Quantitative Social Science Research Group in Paediatrics and Child Health, which employs advanced data analytics to study child and youth population health, including neurodevelopmental conditions and mental health.
Hii's work focuses on quantitative social science research related to mortality patterns. He is a co-author on the 2026 JAMA Pediatrics article 'Mortality Risk of Youth With Neurodevelopmental Conditions: An Aotearoa New Zealand Nationwide Birth Cohort Study,' analyzing health inequalities using national birth cohort data; ethical approval was provided by the University of Otago Human Research Ethics Committee (reference HD22/046). In 2024, he co-authored 'Burden and distribution of mortality due to sepsis and severe infections in Aotearoa New Zealand children: a national population study' in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health. He has been acknowledged for data analysis and report contributions in multiple Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee (CYMRC) reports, including the 11th (2010-2014) and 14th (2013-2017), and Perinatal and Maternal Mortality Review Committee (PMMRC) reports such as the 10th (2016), 11th (2017), 12th (2018), 13th (2019), and 15th.
