Josh Stewart holds the position of Postgraduate Students' Representative for the Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) at the University of Otago. In this leadership role, he advocates for the interests of postgraduate students and serves on key university committees, including the Graduate Research Committee as the elected postgraduate representative on the OUSA Executive and the Graduate Research Student Liaison Committee. His term on the Graduate Research Committee extends until 31 December 2025. Josh Stewart actively engages in student advocacy, as demonstrated by his public comments on university policies such as doctoral scholarship funding.
As a PhD candidate at the University of Otago, Josh Stewart conducts research related to geological events, co-presenting on 'The 1891 Port Waikato Earthquake and its impacts' with Hannah Martin, a PhD candidate from the University of Nevada-Reno. His contributions are acknowledged in the seismic hazard report for the southern South Island, where he collaborated with researchers including Sonja Mueller at Otago. Additionally, Josh Stewart delivered the closing remarks at the Otago Business School Postgraduate Research Symposium on 4 September 2025, an event hosted at the Otago Business School in Dunedin. Joshua Stewart has worked as a Research Assistant on the University of Otago project 'Indigenous Petitioning in Nineteenth Century New Zealand,' led by Associate Professor Miranda Johnston, and has served as a History Tutor and Demonstrator. Through these roles in research, teaching assistance, and student representation, Josh Stewart contributes significantly to the academic and student community at the University of Otago.
