Dr Joshua Adie is a Lecturer in Psychology within the School of Health at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He earned his PhD from the Queensland University of Technology and a Bachelor of Behavioural Science from the University of Queensland. Adie's academic background is rooted in cognitive psychology and sport/performance psychology, with a primary focus on judgement and decision-making processes in high-performance environments. His research extends across diverse sectors, including sports officiating such as umpires and referees, defence applications, esports, and elite high-performance sport. Key specialist areas encompass sport psychology, sport officiating, heuristics and biases, and psychological skills training tailored to these domains. As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Adie demonstrates commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. He currently teaches advanced research methods courses, including PSY400 Research Methods and Analysis 4, and serves as the Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Coordinator for his discipline area.
Adie's scholarly contributions include several impactful publications in leading journals. Notable works feature 'Home advantage and LBW decisions: The contribution of umpiring to the home-ground (dis)advantage in cricket' published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport in 2022, co-authored with Ian Renshaw, Remco Polman, and David L. Mann; 'No expectation bias in elite-level cricket umpires' leg-before-wicket (LBW) decisions according to batting order position' in Psychology of Sport and Exercise in 2022; and 'That's out! How expert umpires make leg-before-wicket decisions' in the Journal of Sports Sciences in 2024. Additional research explores mood profile clusters across physical activity levels, retention and motivation for sport officials, and mental health in esports contexts. These studies provide valuable insights into mitigating biases, enhancing decision accuracy under pressure, and fostering psychological readiness in performance-critical scenarios, influencing practices in sports science and beyond. Adie's ongoing projects investigate psychological skills in sport officiating and esports, as well as readiness and fatigue management in high-performance settings.
