About Joshua

Joshua Miller is Professor of Economics in the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne, where he joined in 2019 and was promoted to full professor in January 2024. He obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in 2009 and his Master's degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before Melbourne, Miller held the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Decision Sciences at Bocconi University from September 2009 to September 2017. His academic interests center on behavioral economics, experimental economics, statistical and experimental methods, microeconomic theory, judgment and decision making, game theory, and decision theory. Miller is associated with the university's Experimental Economics Laboratory and has served as Chief Investigator on projects exploring topics like blame and accountability in economic settings.

Miller's research has made substantial contributions to understanding cognitive biases and decision processes, with particular impact from his series of papers on the hot hand fallacy and selection bias. Prominent publications include "Surprised by the Hot Hand Fallacy? A Truth in the Law of Small Numbers" co-authored with Adam Sanjurjo (Econometrica, 2018); "Why Blame?" with Mehmet Y. Gurdal and Aldo Rustichini (Journal of Political Economy, 2013); "Laplace's Theories of Cognitive Illusions, Heuristics, and Biases" with Andrew Gelman (Statistical Science, 2020); "A Bridge from Monty Hall to the Hot Hand: Restricted Choice, Selection Bias, and Empirical Practice" with Adam Sanjurjo (Journal of Economic Perspectives, 2019); and the recent "A Cold Shower For The Hot Hand Fallacy: Robust Evidence From Controlled Settings" with Adam Sanjurjo (Review of Economics and Statistics, 2024). According to Google Scholar, his work has been cited more than 788 times. For his outstanding teaching, he was awarded the Carol Johnston Teaching Excellence Award in 2022 and the Student-nominated Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2023 by the Faculty of Business and Economics. Additionally, Miller teaches Intermediate Microeconomics and has contributed to public discourse through outlets like The Conversation.
