About Joslynn

Joslynn Lee is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Fort Lewis College, where she joined the faculty in 2019. She earned a B.S. in Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology from Fort Lewis College in 2006 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Northeastern University in 2014. Dr. Lee has a broad background in bioinformatics, with specific training and expertise in next-generation sequencing data and structural genomics. Her research examines how metals impact microbial community structure and function, the role of microbial proteins in metal uptake and management, and environmental microbiome studies designed to increase accessibility of bioinformatics and genomics education in an Indigenous cultural context. Earlier work focused on computational chemistry and molecular modeling.

Dr. Lee previously served as a Data Science Educator at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s DNA Learning Center and as a Science Education Fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth campus. Her contributions include the 2025 Fort Lewis College Achievement Award, the 2023 SACNAS Outstanding College/University Mentor Award, the 2023 Fort Lewis College “Service to FLC” Alumni Award, the 2023 Kavli Frontiers in Science Fellowship, and the 2020 Fort Lewis College Chemistry Department Alumni Award. Selected publications include “Monitoring environmental microbiomes: Alignment of microbiology and computational biology competencies within a culturally integrated curriculum and research framework” (2023) in Molecular Ecology Resources and “Functional classification of protein structures by local structure matching in graph representation” (2018) in Protein Science.
